The Lake Traverse Reservation—600,000 acres in the Dakotas, across the western Minnesota border from Browns Valley—is opened to white settlement. In a scene reminiscent of the Oklahoma land rush, a pistol is shot at noon and the stampede of prospective settlers begins.
